When starch is a concern.

Starch is one of the primary energy sources for a horse’s diet. In most situations some starch is essential to a horse’s growth and performance. For performance horses, starch serves as the glucose source, the major substrate for replenishing muscle and liver glycogen (storage of energy) after exercise. However, there are situations when a horse is sensitive to dietary starch and requires a lower starch diet. A lower starch diet may be considered for a performance horse that is being fed large amounts of grain or is experiencing “tying up” or gastric ulcers. A horse with a history of colic or laminitis may also benefit from a lower starch feed.
